An author with a long-term vision, Toby Litt builds his oeuvre with a self-imposed rule for titling his novels in alphabetical order. He's up to J with book number ten; Journey into Space. For his visit to BorderKitchen he'll be talking about the novel I Play the Drums in a Band Called okay, now out in Dutch translation.
I Play the drums in a Band Called okay is in fact twenty-six stories telling the adventures of the Canadian rock band okay. From the perspective of Clap the drummer we follow the band in tales of sex, drugs and of course rock ‘n roll. All told with a whiff of nostalgia to the times of pre-pimped pop bands. Litt uses music to delve into the themes of masculinity, maturity and even spirituality.
In 2003 Litt was nominated by Granta magazine as one of the 20 Best Young British Novelists.
David Mitchell author of Cloud Atlas has described Litt's work as compelling, enslaving, pointedly intimate and funny too. On I Play the Drums he says "Neat work, Clap. Tsk-boom".
There will also be music at this BorderKitchen!
